Metadata: a discourse on managing digital information
A talk on Metadata was held on 15 September 2000 at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak.   It has attracted around 20 participants mainly librarians and information managers all around Kuching.

The speakers were Ms. Fitri Suraya Mohamad, a lecturer on Instructional Technology from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Mr. Johan Ismail, Chief Technology Officer at Patimas Computer Berhad.

Ms. Fitri serves as a secretariat member of the National Strategic Thrusts Implementation Committee (STIC) on E-Learning and is currently a deputy head of the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia at the University, an entity that looks into the online education and training designs for the campus. Meanwhile, Mr. Johan Ismail has worked on numerous software development projects worldwide, including one for the British government, to systematically  train their teachers with Information and Communications Technology Skills.

The sole objectives of this talk was to give new insight to metadata and its importance in today’s library world. It also introduced the key terms of reference and concepts used in digital information management. The participants are made aware the important development in the information management, particulalry to support knowledge acquisition and development in this digital age.

Efficient and effective library Buildings
Do you want to know how to plan a good library building or do you want to know who designed our State Library’s Building. If you want to know the anser to the above questions, you should have attended a talk given by Dr. David Jones, organized by PNS which was held on 24 August 2000 in cooperation with PPMKSAR.

Dr. David Jones and his team from The State Library of New South Wales have consulted on over 10 library and information services in Australia and overseas including The State Library of Sarawak.

The purpose of  the talk was to provide opportunities for the Sarawak librarians to discuss the importance of planning an efficient library building, in terms of sizing, accessibility issues, layout and the concept of “future proffing”.  These are important questions to ask an expert in library designs.
 

Training : Cataloging of Non-Book Materials
A 2-day Workshop on “Cataloging of Non-Book Materials (NBM)” was successfully held at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak (PNS) on 28-29 August 2000.

The workshop was organized by PPMKSAR with cooperation from PNS and the coordinator for the workshop was Dayang Zarina Abang Ismail, a librarian from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). The registration fee was RM100.00 and covered course materials, lunch and tea break.

The workshop has attracted 50 participants from all over Sarawak mainly District Councils and State Departments.
The workshop led participants with the importance of NBM and discussed problems encountered organizing them. The activity was designed to help participants to focus on the need to catalog and process the materials to enable easy retrieval and usage to library users.
